He let out a short laugh. How ironic could things get? His mate was not only a sorcerer, but he was also the son of the very man who’d enslaved Duncan for all those years. It couldn’t be helped though, his love for Trent combined with their mental link left no doubt in his mind that it was real.

Sliding on his jeans and shirt, he didn’t bother with socks as he went to the door. In between bouts of lovemaking last night, Trent had told him that he’d made it so the shield would stay in place if either one of them opened the door from the inside and welcomed someone in.

Duncan could sense the two dragons were on the porch now, waiting to be let in. Since they knew he would already be aware of their presence, they didn’t bother to knock. As he reached for the handle, he noticed his hand shook with trepidation. It had been a decade since he’d talked to anyone from back home. Too ashamed of what was happening to him, he hadn’t even bothered with a call, email, or even a cheap postcard. For all he knew they could have written him off as a traitor and the pair could be here to execute him, not lend a helping hand.

Still, he had no choice. That was the song of his life and he was getting damn sick of listening to it. Steeling himself for whatever reception he would get, he opened the door.

When he saw the two dragons on the other side, he couldn’t hide his surprise.

“Nicolas,” he breathed, feeling numb with shock. He’d never imagine one of his brothers would be part of the rescue mission.

Nicolas hadn’t changed much in the past ten years. He had light brown hair that was collar length in the back, but still managed to fall into his face. While he had on the same type of faded blue jeans he’d always worn, he’d upgraded from rock tees to a long-sleeved button up shirt. The one thing that had changed was his eyes. Once bright blue and dancing with life, they were now dull and almost haunted looking. He just gazed at Duncan, his face cold and giving nothing away.

“Someone has some ‘splaining to do,” the other dragon sang.

Duncan smiled. He recognised that smartass tone anywhere. Mick.
